The purpose of the expo is to provide a venue to connect people with meaningful opportunities to explore Universally Designed products, Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Assistive Technology (AT) and to raise the profile of these tools to the general public and policy makers.

The 5G Mobile Evolution Lab located in the College of Engineering  at the  University of Massachusetts Amherst is a leading research lab in the area of assistive technologies for the blind and visually impaired. University of Massachusetts Professor Aura Ganz is perfecting a program to advance the visually impaired’s quality of life. The PERCEPT indoor navigation system provides a visually impaired person with audio directions to destinations via a Bluetooth headset. 

The PERCEPT system supports a number of unique features such as: a) Low deployment and maintenance cost; b) Scalability  c) An on-demand system that does not overwhelm the user, as it offers small amounts of information on demand; and d) Portability and ease-of-use. The system complements existing mobility and orientation aids for the blind, such as the cane and/or dog.
