The 5G Mobile Evolution Lab located in the College of Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst is a leading research lab in the area of assistive technologies for the blind and visually impaired. University of Massachusetts Professor Aura Ganz is perfecting a program to advance the visually impaired’s quality of life. The PERCEPT indoor navigation system provides a visually impaired person with audio directions to destinations via a Bluetooth headset.
The PERCEPT system supports a number of unique features such as: a) Low deployment and maintenance cost; b) Scalability c) An on-demand system that does not overwhelm the user, as it offers small amounts of information on demand; and d) Portability and ease-of-use. The system complements existing mobility and orientation aids for the blind, such as the cane and/or dog.
